Consumer Boycott

Make Your Spending Count: The Consumer Boycott Toolkit

Boycott is a peaceful action against Israel until it complies with international law, respects Palestinian human rights, and dismantles its apartheid system.

Why We Boycott

As consumers we have choices. The sale of Israeli goods helps fund the war crimes in Gaza and the illegal occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem. By joining this campaign, you are participating in a historically successful method of targeted resistance.

Answering Challenging Questions

The main challenge we face is countering the indifference of ignorance. Download the full briefing sheet below, or review the key responses right here.

The ASDA Campaign: Stop Sourcing Apartheid Goods

We often want to know what else we can do to demonstrate our support and solidarity with Palestine. Here is a direct action we are asking as many of you as possible to take.

We are targeting ASDA because evidence suggests they have been consciously misleading customers with the labelling of their produce, which might result in customers unknowingly buying Israeli goods. ASDA should not be selling Israeli produce, full stop! The sale of these items helps fund the genocide in Gaza, as well as the occupation and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. ASDA is profiting from these immoral sales, despite claiming to operate under an enhanced ethical policy.

What We Are Asking Members to Do

Follow these five steps to take action at your local store:

  • 1. Get the Letter Download and print the official letter we have drafted for the ASDA Store Manager.
  • 2. Visit Your Local ASDA On your next visit to your nearest ASDA store, ask at the customer service desk to speak directly with the Store Manager, explaining that you wish to hand in a formal letter.
  • 3. Deliver the Message Be confident and assertive—you are 100% in the right. In your own words, communicate these key points to the manager:
    • You are appalled that ASDA continues to source produce from Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
    • You understand this decision is out of their direct control as a store manager, but you expect them to feed your serious concerns up to senior management and corporate buyers.
    • ASDA does not need to sell apartheid produce from Israel when alternatives exist globally. (Note: You can mention that you are pleased to see Palestinian dates on sale in many stores).
    • In July 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian Territory is unlawful. By continuing these sales, ASDA risks being complicit in war crimes.
    • We are not boycotting ASDA as a whole; we are boycotting Israeli produce. We want ASDA to make an ethical decision to add economic pressure on Israel to dismantle its apartheid regime.
    • Thank them for their time, and reiterate your request that they escalate this to senior buyers.
  • 4. Stay Persistent 💥 Become a persistent thorn in ASDA’s side. We need to make it completely obvious to corporate management that their customers are highly annoyed by ASDA’s indifference.
  • 5. Report Back to Us 📧 Send a quick email to contact@gmfriendsofpalestine.org letting us know which store you visited and when the letter was handed in so we can track the scale of our campaign.

A Note: This action asks a lot of us and might push many outside of their comfort zones, but true solidarity with Palestine requires us to push our boundaries. Surprise and delight yourself through your activism!
