‘The Battle of Algiers’ (1966), depicts the eponymous 1957 battle in Algiers, which came amidst the wider Algerian fight for freedom and independence from their colonial oppressor: France. The film, shot in Algiers a few years after liberation, is an authentic depiction of the plight of the Algerian people, the brutality they suffered, and the resistance tactics utilised to eventually overthrow their coloniser.

As the Youth Front for Palestine, it is imperative that we highlight the international and intersectional aspects of the fight for Palestinian liberation. The youth and wider communities of Palestine and Algeria, across the course of their respective struggles, have been the ones on the frontlines, sacrificing in service of the cause of freedom and justice. After 132 years of savage settler-colonialism, the Algerian people liberated themselves through armed struggle. 78 years into the occupation of Palestine, we look back at the Algerian struggle and victory to learn and remind ourselves that victory is inevitable. The parallels between both struggles are striking. Both were assailed by European settlers denying the rights of the indigenous and committing ethnic cleansing as they sought to dominate with overwhelming violence. Both oppressors left no option to the oppressed but revolutionary violence.

We are but one front amongst many in the struggle for liberation; one aspect of the unity of the fields. Our role as youth is to honour the revolutionaries that have come before us and carry their legacies in the fight for a better world. We must channel this into meaningful change and action here in Britain.

So join us on Friday 23rd October at 6pm, as we highlight the parallels between the Algerian Revolution and the ongoing fight for a free Palestine!
