All out in Manchester this Saturday 7th December to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the First Intifada and to remind the world that resisting occupation is a duty! Meeting at St Peter’s Square, Manchester City Centre, 12pm
On 8th December 1987, four Palestinians were murdered just outside of Jabaliya refugee camp in Gaza, having been deliberately run over by Israeli soldiers in military jeeps. The funerals of the four martyrs were attended by approximately 10,000 people, and the next day, the Israeli Occupation Forces fired live ammunition into a crowd, killing 17 year-old Hatem Abu Sisi and wounding 16 others.
In immediate response, Palestinians, town by town and city by city, began to mobilise, thus commencing the First Intifada. Protests broke out across Occupied Palestine, be it in Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem and beyond. Palestinians employed different tactics to damage the Zionist regime, including mass strikes, boycotts, facing off against the Israeli military and armed Zionist settlers alike, and barricading their respective communities and neighbourhoods to prevent Israeli forces entering them.
The actions of the Zionist regime on 8th December ignited a sustained reaction from an occupied, indigenous population. Palestinians, who had, at the time, already spent the best part of 70 years resisting foreign occupation and colonisation, harnessed their anger of injustice and utilised it to fuel effective change against the backdrop of the spread of illegal settlements, of ethnic cleansing, and of brutal settler-colonial oppression.
Having erupted in Jabaliya refugee camp, from which Israel is currently attempting to expel Palestinians during the genocide in Gaza, commemoration of the First Intifada is a reminder that Palestinian resistance is alive and well. It is not an option to resist against occupation; it is a duty, and we must channel the spirit of Palestinians as they carry out this duty in refusing to submit to Zionist oppression. This is what it means to globalise the intifada!
Join us on Saturday 7th December to rise up with Palestinians and reject Zionist colonisation!
